Separating fact from fiction about therapy and counseling in Ann Arbor, MI

Fiction: A THERAPIST IS JUST THERE TO LISTEN AND NOD THEIR HEADS.

Fact: Building a connection is crucial. When was the last time you had a connection with a bobble head? A strong therapeutic alliance between you and your therapist is key to successful outcomes. Related to that, it’s okay to shop around. Finding the right therapist might take a few tries. It's perfectly acceptable to explore until you find the right fit.

Fiction: I don’t need a therapist, I have my mom, sister, friend, or partner.

Fact: Your friends and family can’t be your therapist. One of the benefits of having your own therapist is their ability to make objective observations about your life. Your friends and family can’t be objective.

Fiction: People I know will find out I’m in therapy.

Fact: Confidentiality is paramount. What you discuss in therapy stays between you and your therapist. I always tell my clients that I won’t share anything they share with me unless they give me explicit written permission. The only exception to this is if there are safety concerns (if you, your children, or an elder are at risk).

Fiction: I can’t go to therapy, I live in a small town and know everyone.

Fact: Online therapy is safe, secure, and totally private. Therapist use online platforms with HIPPA-level encryption ensuring that what you share stays that way. And better yet, you don’t have to worry about nosey neighbors in your small town.

Fiction: Only “crazy” people go to therapy. PS, I hate that word and the shaming that comes with it.

Fact: Therapy is for Everyone. Counseling and therapy are beneficial for anyone seeking personal growth and self-discovery. And research has demonstrated time and again that it doesn’t matter if you get it in the office or online.

Fiction: A Therapist won’t really listen, they’ll just tell me what to do.

Fact: Therapy is collaborative. It's not about the therapist telling you what to do; it's a partnership where you work together toward your goals. I often use the analogy of a car, a map, and a compass. You are in the driver’s seat of your life. I’m in the passenger seat with a map and compass, gently offering direction and guidance when you need it. You Set the Agenda. While therapists guide the process, you have the power to decide what topics to explore and work on.

Fiction: My therapist will judge, criticize, shame, embarrass, or laugh at me.

Fact: You can discuss anything and I won’t judge you. There are no off-limits topics in therapy. You have the freedom to bring up anything on your mind. You are also not required to share EVERYTHING about your life. Therapy provides a non-judgmental space to express your thoughts and feelings. It's okay to feel uncomfortable. Growth often occurs outside your comfort zone. Therapy might bring up difficult emotions, but that's part of the process.

Fiction: LISTENING TO PEOPLE TALK ALL DAY ISN’T REAL WORK

Fact: It is real work, for both of us, and Progress takes time. Real change doesn't happen overnight. Therapy is a gradual process, and patience is crucial. That said, therapy isn't endless. While it's not a quick fix, therapy is also not meant to go on forever. Goals are set, achieved, and therapy concludes when you're ready. Remember, it’s a journey, not a destination. The  journey promotes continuous self-discovery and personal growth.

Fiction: GOING TO THE GYM EVERY DAY IS JUST LIKE GOING TO SEE A THERAPIST or Counselor

Fact: Therapy Isn't a Quick Fix. I fully support you going to the gym! There are great mental health benefits to this! But, while a good workout can provide immediate and temporary relief for low mood or anxiety, it doesn’t get at the root of the problem. Therapy is a process that requires dedication and effort on your part. Long-lasting change takes commitment. Be open to it and therapy will teach you valuable coping skills that you can continue to use well after therapy has ended.
