Questions to ask a Psychologist, Counselor, or Therapist in Ann Arbor, MI

How to Reach Out to a Psychologist, Counselor, or Therapist in Ann Arbor, MI

So, you found a few therapists or psychologists in Ann Arbor that seemed like they might be a good fit based on their websites and the services they offer. And they all offer a FREE consultation. But, what should you say when you get on a call? What should you ask?

5 Questions to Ask a Therapist or Counelor in Ann Arbor, MI

What are you coming to therapy for?

Is it anxiety, stress at home or work, depression, issues with dating and relationships, infidelity, marriage counseling, divorce, grief, or a traumatic experience? The list of reasons why people seek out therapy is endless, and there are no right or wrong answers. What’s important is whether or not your potential therapist is the right fit for you and the issue you’re coming to therapy for.

When you’re on the phone with a potential therapist, don’t be shy about letting them know what made you reach out in and ask them if they feel they can treat your presenting issue. If they say no, don’t take it personally, they’re not the right fit for you, but ask them if they know anyone who can better assist. For example, not every therapist works with grief - in fact - I used to offer trainings to other therapists on “Getting Comfortable with Grief.” And not every therapist works with substance abuse, or eating disorders, or couples and families.

Do your schedules work together?

Do you have a hectic schedule that doesn’t allow for you to commit to the same time slot each week? Some therapists can offer flexible and rotating appointment times and others are not able to do so. This is important to address with a therapist before scheduling your first appointment.

Are you planning to use your insurance or are you comfortable paying out of pocket (OOP)?

Not all therapists participate with every plan and some therapists dont participate with any. If you plan to use your insurance, have this conversation before scheduling your first visit to make sure they participate with your plan.

Online Therapy in Ann ARbor, michigan

Does the therapist have an office in Ann Arbor or nearby? Or do they practice online therapy across Michigan? What is your preference? Research studies prove time and again that there are no differences in clinical outcomes when a client sees a therapist in an office vs online. However, some clients are more comfortable coming to an office while others are more comfortable attending therapy from the privacy and comfort of their own home. Make sure the therapist your considering working with offers the avenue that you prefer.

And last but not least…

When you get off the phone with them, how do you feel?

Did they listen to your concerns? Did you feel heard, understood, and validated? Or did you feel misunderstood or talked over or that your concerns were dismissed in some way? If you didn’t feel enthusiastic about scheduling your first appointment with this therapist, they may not be a good fit for you. It’s okay to shop around for a better fit!
